Do A Challenge For Charity

By Susan Donaldson, B.A. (Hons), Animal Campaigner

You do a challenge for charity to help animals. There are a number of types of challenges, which can include terrifying endeavours, such as parachute jumps, wing walks, bungee jumps, or endurance challenges.

One type of endurance challenge is the mass participation challenge event, which involves anything from running, to swimming, to scrambling through mud on your knees.

This page tells you all about the challenge for charity events in the UK, and how you, and animal charities, can get involved.

What Is Mass Participation Challenge For Charity Events?

This is where large numbers of people take part in the same event at the same time. Participants can choose to get sponsored for any charity registered with the event.

There are a number of these events staged every year, such as runs, walks, obstacle courses, swims, bike rides, colour runs, triathlons, treks, and more.

How To Get Places In Challenge For Charity Events

There are typically two routes into such an event: gaining a charity place, or paying for your own entry place.

Applying for a charity entry place: In most events, a charity pays for a limited number of entry places up front. People then apply for those places, agreeing to raise money for the charity by asking people to sponsor them. Sometimes people with charity places are required to raise a minimum amount for the charity.

Paying for your own entry place: In oversubscribed events, there is a ballot people have to enter to try to gain an entry place. Those who get one pay their entrants fee to the event organisers. With other events, entrants are first come, first served.

If you purchased your own entry place, you are normally free to raise money for whatever animal charity or cause you choose, even if it is not registered with the event.

If you choose an animal charity not registered with the event, contact the animal charity directly, telling them you have purchased your own entry place in an event and wish to use it to raise money for them. Many animal charities and rescues will provide you with support and help.

How Do Animal Charities Get Involved With These Events?

There are different packages offered to charities depending on the event, including a basic package where they are required to pay up front for each entry place they want. Sometimes charities have to enter a ballot to try to win entry places (that they still have to pay for) in oversubscribed events. Rules differ from event to event.

On this page, you will find just a few of the many mass participation challenge events organised each year in the UK. To find others local to you, search online through charity search engines, so you raise money for animal charities while searching.

There are many similar events organised in other countries too.

There are other challenge events you can do for animal charities, such as zip wires, abseiling, skydiving, total wipe out, and zombie escape.

The London Marathon

The London Marathon is a hugely popular event in the UK’s capital city. You must be over 18 years old to take part.

There are two entry routes:

  1. Gaining Your Own Entry Place:To try to gain your own entry place, you must enter a ballot, as The London Marathon is very popular. You can use that entry place to raise money for charity by getting people to sponsor you. If you have your own entry place, you may be able to raise money for an animal charity or rescue even if they are not registered with the event. In that case, you should contact the animal charity direct.
  2. Applying For A Charity Entry Place:You can apply for an entry place through a charity registered with the event, and run for that charity. If you run for charity, the charity normally pays for your place, and you are required to raise money for them through getting sponsored by people.

How Do Animal Charities Register With The London Marathon Challenge For Charity?

For charities to take part, they must enter a charity ballot. Charities who register their interest  in advance will be contacted with details on how to enter the next charity ballot once available. There are different packages that charities can purchase, including a golden bond and silver bond package.

Not Officially Charity Events, But You Can Still Fund-Raise

Some events say on their websites that even if the event isn’t publicised as a charity event, you are welcome to use your own purchased entry place to get sponsored and raise money for an animal charity or rescue of your choice.

Just contact the animal charity or rescue directly and then get people to sponsor you to do it. It just won’t be officially done through the event organiser because no charities are registered with the event.

For example, the Colour Obstacle Rush, (Brighton, Windsor, Wolverhampton, Milton Keynes, London, Newcastle, Derby West, Bath, Sheffield, Liverpool, and Exeter), say that although they are not charity events, participants are welcome to raise money for their chosen charity. They even provide sponsor forms, which are downloadable from their sites.

The Westminster Mile in London also says on its website that although charities cannot purchase places in the event, entrants who have purchased places are welcome to gain sponsorship to raise money for a charity of their choice.

Small Challenges For Charity

Although the challenges for charity mentioned on this page have big rather big ones, there are much smaller ones.

For instance, you could do a challenge for charity where you get sponsored by your spouse, and/or other family members / friends, to be silent for a whole 24 hours.

You could get sponsored to do an embarrassing challenge for charity, where every movement you made for 24 hours had to be in the style of expressive contemporary dance.

There are many small challenges for charity you could come up with to raise money to help animals. They can be a lot of fun, and children are often enthusiastic to get involved as well.
